More about the Leyland Titan
The Leyland Titan was the first of a new generation of
rear-engined double-deckers to enter the market in the 1970s. The design is
considered by many to have been well ahead of its time and was an attempt by
Leyland to produce a standard double-decker. Leyland used lessons learned from
the first generation of rear-engined double-deckers (Atlantean / Fleetline / VRT)
to produce what should have been the ultimate design.
The Titan came with integral construction, hydraulic
brakes and independent front suspension as standard. The vehicle took much
longer than expected to enter full production and many potential orders for the
model were lost to rival manufacturers, especially MCW who were enjoying great
success with their Metrobus design.
In the end London was the only significant customer,
taking 1,164 new Titans. Other orders came from Reading (12), Greater Manchester
(15) and West Midlands PTE (5).
Oxford Bus Company were one of a number of operators who
purchased used Leyland Titans from London in the mid-1990's to replace elderly
first generation rear-engined double-deckers. In this case Oxford purchased 26
Titans to replace Bristol VRTs. The Titans were all refurbished prior to
entering service with Oxford and many of their unique features were removed to
make them more like Leyland Olympians.
A869 SUL was acquired by Oxford in a de-roofed state and
was the last Leyland Titan to enter service in the city following repair. When
withdrawn 975 joined the collection of preserved vehicles at the Oxford Bus
Museum where it remained until passing to Woottens in 2007.
The vehicle is preserved in Oxford Bus Company livery. |
